KYBURZ DXP 2ndLife in use at Austrian Post

On Good Friday, the first of 50 KYBURZ DXP 2nd Life vehicles for Austrian Post arrived at the Austrian Post fleet in Vienna. The first feedback is positive. The task now is to verify the mass of the newly designed rear box in a short practical test. This test will take place from Thursday, 8.4. for 10 days in Graz. Of course we have already tested the box with the "depot pocket dummies" at our place - a confirmation that the postmen at the front can work well with it is necessary before the start of the series. We want to be sure that our vehicle proves itself in practice. Parallel to the production of the first box, the sales department, together with our service department and Karl-Mayer Elektromobile GmbH, have pushed ahead with the preparations for the introduction of the 50 vehicles at Österreichische Post. They will be stationed in Graz, Linz and Villach. Responsible service partners have been found for all 3 locations. The schedule is ambitious and depends on many factors. We will continue to report on the deployment.

Object of the week: Front fork

Since the early 1990s, the front wheels of KYBURZ three-wheeled electric vehicles have been mounted on forks made by EBR. On the homepage of the family-owned company from near Bologna, countless different forks for small and medium-sized motorbikes are pictured. What is striking is that they are all two-arm forks! However, KYBURZ has been building forks with one bar for over twenty years.

Martin Kyburz remembers well a meeting with the Risi family at a trade fair: "We were already using two-arm forks from EBR, but I wanted to change to a one-arm fork. Father and son Risi objected and only spoke Italian." So KYBURZ developed the fork itself. It is now built by the specialist EBR.

The KYBURZ fork still has two bars at the top of the suspension, but at the bottom the front wheel is only held by one strong fork bar. The advantage? Producton staff can assemble the wheel more easily and service technicians have much easier access to the brake and axle.

First customer to own a KYBURZ DXS 30 Years Edition

Peter Sonderegger from Bülach is the proud owner of the first DXS 30 Years Edition. On Friday, 9 April 2021, he visited us in Freienstein and collected the vehicle himself. He became aware of us via the Internet and the "Postwägeli", which he sees every day in Bülach.

Peter Sonderegger has not driven a car for a long time. But now he is looking forward to being able to transport his shopping with it. He even has an underground parking space at home waiting for his new DXS.

We wish Peter Sonderegger a safe journey and much joy with his new vehicle.

How much is one tonne of CO2?

By operating our electric vehicles, all our customers contribute to saving a lot of CO2. Over 350 million kilometres have already been travelled with the DXP. If the same number of kilometres had been travelled with petrol-powered motorbikes, 77,000 tonnes more CO2 would have been produced.

How much is 1 tonne of CO2 anyway? Since it is a gas, it is difficult to get an idea. CO2 has a density of 1.96 g/l. This means that 1 kg of CO2 is accumulated when 510 litres of CO2 gas are gathered together. That is already quite a big balloon of 1 m diameter. To visualise a tonne of CO2, we need a swimming pool 25 m long, 10 m wide and 2 m deep. This swimming pool filled with the gas CO2 weighs one ton.

05.04.2021, MK

You can find more detailed information in the Swiss Climate fact sheet:

Good to know:
In 2018, each person in Switzerland produced an average of 4.3 tonnes of CO2.

Approval of the DXP in Thailand

You can imagine; getting registered in a new country is always a big deal... A very big deal....

It's no different in Thailand - even if you might imagine it to be easier there.

In Thailand, the DXP was first classified as a scooter. For this category, we met almost all the criteria right away and it looked very good for a simple individual approval. This was only until someone higher up at the road traffic office got wind of it: "The vehicle has three wheels. Three wheels means it MUST be in the Tuk Tuk category", which entails the following points for change:

  • Top Speed at least 45 km/h and more
  • Engine with more power
  • Number plate in the front
  • Rear number plate lighting
  • Roof with glass panel
  • Windscreen wiper
  • Rear bumper (bumper)
  • Reversing light

Thomas Lüscher received support from the Swiss Embassy. The ambassador organised a meeting with the General Director of the Department of Land Transport.

All necessary technical changes were quickly implemented by Thomas Lüscher and Oscar Moradi, so that a Thai version of the DXP with roof now exists.

We have passed the first formal part of this approval. The dynamic test at the TAI (Thailand Automotive Institute) as well. Here, the vehicle had to drive for 30 minutes at a speed greater than 45km/h on a test bench and deliver a minimum required power of more than 4kW. These criteria are completely different from the criteria for European approval - welcome to Thailand ;-). Now it is only a formality until we can receive the licence plate from the Department of Land Transport.

Afterwards, we will set up another 17 demonstration vehicles on site in Rayong. These are for other customers and delivery services.

Thai Post thinks our vehicles are great. Our fleet data speaks for itself: since the end of 2019, two DXPs have been in daily use on the gigantic Thai Post premises in Bangkok. One vehicle has already covered 4800 km in this time and this only in the internal post office area!

The English-language daily newspaper "The Nation Thailand", which is published in Bangkok, has reported on our activities in Thailand. You can read the report here:

Pain-free in the saddle - an illusion?

Indisputably, the good reputation of the ePedelec as a daily work tool depends to a large extent on the riding comfort during intensive use. If after a short time in the saddle the buttocks hurt and the tortured seat meat massively impairs the riding pleasure and ultimately the joy of working, our high-flying (technical) ideas for a sophisticated cargo bike will hardly be appreciated.

Read more about choosing the right saddle in the report:

Electric company vehicles at KYBURZ

Did you know that we also drive electrically powered vehicles internally? We currently have a Nissan eNV200, a Renault Zoe and a Renault Twizy in addition to many DXPs and PLUS. This allows us to travel between our locations completely emission-free.
The electric vehicles cost us only half as much to maintain as the diesel cars. We have never had a problem with the batteries.

09.04.2021, JAG

Good to know:
As an employee of KYBURZ, you can rent the Renault Zoe by the week.
You can book it easily via our fleet system. However, please make sure that the vehicle is available during office hours at the company and make sure that you return the Zoe clean and charged.

Do you have any questions about our electric vehicles? Matthias Röthlin will be happy to answer them.

A day in the life of Erik Wilhelm

Erza Mehmeti: How long have you been with KYBURZ?

Erik Wilhelm: I have been with KYBURZ for 4½ happy years.

Erza: What are your activities?

Erik: I am responsible for our research team, which consists of four pillars. First of all, we are responsible for pre-development. We often get assignments from the fleet and development teams, implement new ideas and see if they have what it takes to become a product. We do the first trials, which then become, for example, the AUS emergency alarm button or the CH Post hand scanner. Secondly, we compile statistics for all business areas and use them to create data analyses. In the third pillar, we act as a "fire brigade", so to speak. If something doesn't go well, we step in and do our best to satisfy our customers. In the fourth pillar, we develop self-driving vehicles. We do these lighthouse projects with the aim of spreading the enthusiasm for our KYBURZ technology.

Erza: What is your typical daily routine?

Erik: I get up and help get my kids ready for school and then usually start work at my home office. I usually finish at around 5 or 5.30 pm. I always set myself a daily goal that I want to achieve. However, I may also have to work night shifts if my daily target is too ambitious. Since my work is mainly project-related, I don't have a fixed daily routine in the classical sense. Some people might not like that, but I find that it makes my work exciting.

Erza: What do you like? What not so much?

Erik: I really like working here. It is very pleasant. The company philosophy revolves around higher goals, such as sustainability or customer satisfaction. I also particularly like the fact that our company mission statement is so diverse and truly implemented in practice.

What I don't like so much at the moment is that there is a lull in interest from our customers in the field of autonomous driving, as a result of which fewer customer projects are being offered. They have been experimenting with autonomous technology (mostly from competitors) and have now realised how much we all still have to do before the technology is ready.

Erza: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Erik: I like to be active in sports, such as jogging and biking but especially like being in the mountains climbing or skiing and mountaineering. I have also been experimenting intensively in the kitchen for about 2 years. I also like to go on excursions with my family, also in the mountains, because they like to be there too. We just did our first family ski tour.

Learn to drive an electric car

A Tesla from the Wintifahrschule is charged every now and then at a charging station on Shedweg. Driving instructor Daniel Baltensperger, who lives in Freienstein, teaches in a Tesla.

Do you want to take your driving test with an electric car? At the Wintifahrschule, you'll get to know the gears and clutch with a petrol car, but then it's electric all the way to the test.

If you're interested, Daniel Honegger will give you a voucher for your first free driving lesson.
