We are nominated
With our recycling plant for lithium batteries, we have been nominated for the Green Business Award 2021.
The Green Business Award recognises the best solutions in Switzerland that combine ecological innovations with economic success.
KYBURZ's process for recycling batteries from electric vehicles is an innovation: for the first time, lithium-ion batteries can be completely broken down into their components. Up to 91 percent of the raw materials are recovered without the use of chemicals. The process was developed by Olivier Groux when he was working on his thesis as an environmental scientist.
KYBURZ has deliberately not patented the process and makes the know-how available to all interested parties. The consultation of organisations from the fields of e-mobility and recycling should help to ensure that the new approach becomes established in a short time.
Apart from us, 35 other companies have been nominated. The award ceremony will take place on 22 September 2021. We will continue to keep you updated.

The starting signal for the 1st Circular Economy Challenge 2021 has been given
The deadline for applications has passed and the teams for participation have been selected. In the OPEN category, 28 applications were received and we decided on 10 teams. For the ECO category, there were 10 teams and 5 of them made it to the next round.
The teams will now move into the vehicles and start with their projects. You will find out more about the teams in the next in-house newspaper.

The latest TECH TALK by and with Martin
An episode from my new video diary TECH TALK will appear weekly. It will be published on our homepage and on YouTube. Become an insider and follow my YouTube channel. You will get interesting insights into the world of KYBURZ.
Object of the week: Recuperation (Reku) limitation module
When an electric vehicle drives downhill, the motor brakes and produces electricity that is fed back into the batteries, which is referred to by the technical word "recuperation". If the batteries are fully charged and the vehicle recuperates, the batteries would be overcharged. There are two ways to prevent this:
On the one hand, recuperation can be suspended, which switches off the engine brake.
On the other hand, the recuperation limiting module can be installed. When the batteries are fully charged, the excess current is burnt up in the recuperation limiting module. Thus, the engine brake remains effective even in the case of fully charged batteries.
The regulation of the currents is demanding. When does energy have to be burned up? When does the current flow back into the battery? KYBURZ was one of the first vehicle manufacturers to use reliably controlled recu-limiting modules as early as the late 1990s.

eRods are built at the technical school in Geneva
This is already the third eRod that has been assembled at the "Centre de formation professionnelle Technique" (CFPT) in Geneva with the full-time automotive mechatronics trainees. With the help of KYBURZ instructions and the instructor, the students assemble the eRod on their own in the CFPT workshops. The KYBURZ eRod team is of course available to answer any questions. Even the painting of the casing parts is done by the students themselves. As part of their training, the students completely build an eRod together as a class over the course of a year. The finished vehicle is then returned to KYBURZ. The project is greatly appreciated by the students: "My greatest pride was seeing the vehicle drive after all the work we had done," says Luca Perotta. "The project allows the students to learn about the different aspects of an electric vehicle and the peculiarities associated with it, as well as bringing the trainees up to date with the latest technologies," says Jérôme Pochon, the school's director, who goes on to say, "We thank the KYBURZ company for this valuable collaboration and hope to repeat this project in the coming years."

Do you have any questions about the project? Laurence Nève will be happy to answer them.
You can find more information about the school here:
Good to know:
The assembled eRod #085 will now be technically tested and redeemed by KYBURZ. The vehicle can then be rented from us and later purchased as a used vehicle.

News from KYBURZ in Thailand - a company name emerges
When we were thinking about what name to use to distribute our vehicles in Thailand, several possibilities crossed our minds. The name KYBURZ has the disadvantage that Thai people do not know how to pronounce it correctly. Since the KYBURZ KYBEE is to be produced in Thailand, the name KYBEE as a brand name seemed obvious. However, this could not be used as such, since "Ky" means "excrement" in Thailand. So in the end we agreed on the name "K-BEE". "K" stands for KYBURZ and "Bee" means bee in English. To make it clear to our potential customers that we are talking about electric vehicles, we use the suffix "Vehicles". The red "E" and "V" together make "EV". This in turn stands for "electric vehicles".
We are also not allowed to use the Swiss cross on vehicles that were not produced in Switzerland. That is why we have added the addition "Licensed by KYBURZ" - which means "Licensed by KYBURZ". With this little trick we can still associate the Swiss cross with the brand "K-BEE".

Further hunting education in the showroom
Hunters invest a lot of time in the training of their tracking dogs, but they also continue to educate themselves. Like at the professional shooting seminar last Saturday, 24 April 2021, which took place in the KYBURZ showroom in Freienstein.
What is a professional launching seminar? Imagine you hit a deer with your car and it runs away injured. You call the police and they send a hunter with a trained dog to look for the animal. The seminar helps the hunter to better analyse what happened to the animal. At the scene of the accident, so-called stalking signs are visible, such as blood, bone splinters or hair, which indicate the type of injury. This was demonstrated by the lecturer Alexander Kelle, district manager at the Bavarian State Forests Franconian Forest, using theoretical and practical parts, in which 21 hunters from all over Switzerland took part. The seminar was organised by the jagdhundeausbildung.ch of Jolanda and Peter Giger.
During the break, KYBURZ vehicles were diligently test driven - including the hunting vehicle.

Pay equity analysis man / woman
Equal work or work of equal value must be paid equally for both sexes. The principle of equal pay for women and men has been enshrined in the Federal Constitution since 1981.
We carried out this analysis with the tool provided by the Confederation (Logib) as of January 2021 and came to the conclusion that the women in our company earn 5% more than the men.
Smaller deviations are within the tolerance. There is no need for action in our company.

Fleet installation on semi-trailers at Planzer
Trailer tracking with Fleet, many already know this from our PAH. Last week, a Fleet Box was installed on a large semi-trailer at the Planzer company - with one striking difference: modern truck semi-trailers and trailers have a so-called trailer EBS system, an electronic brake and position control system. It contains data such as the current mileage, the distance until the next service, the lateral acceleration, the axle weight and other technical information. The KYBURZ Fleet-Box can read out and evaluate the data from the EBS system and display it in the Fleet Portal. The vehicle owner is thus always informed about the use and current condition of the trailer and can better coordinate its operations and service intervals.
Mario Fischer accompanied the pilot installation at Planzer. Everything worked right from the start. The other initially 19 vehicles can be equipped directly by the Planzer workshop.
Do you have any questions? Then contact Mario Fischer.
What is a trailer EBS?
EBS is a standardised on-board computer system on trailers for the tasks of brake and position/tilt control as well as for monitoring roadworthiness.

A day in the life of Willy Federer
Erza Mehmeti: How long have you been with KYBURZ?
Willy Federer: I have only been with KYBURZ since 1 September 2020.
Erza: What are your activities?
Willy: As a technical editor in the service department, I create service manuals, videos and, if necessary, support the development department and others who also create manuals.
I work 80% here and 20% at Drogovita GmbH, for whom I am currently renovating a flat in Nesslau.
Erza: What is your typical daily routine?
Willy: I start work on the train shortly before 7 am and then arrive at the office at around 8 am. At the moment I am working on the service folder for the eTrolley and PAH-W. These longer-term tasks are interrupted by smaller or bigger jobs that need to be done more urgently. At lunchtime I go for a walk and eat at a nice place. Around 6 p.m. I am back in Wittenbach, do the shopping and then prepare a simple dinner for the family at home.
Erza: What do you like? What not so much?
Willy: In general, I love my work here and the team. The courage and energy with the associated innovative power of Martin Kyburz and all the employees is really extraordinary and a great motivating factor. This also always provides material for new instructions.
Even if I don't have any capacity to spare at the moment, it would be great if the effort for new manuals were more in our hands instead of in the development department and if they were given more time.
In the meantime, I understand why many things are the way they are and would hardly change anything - with the exception of the 2 weeks of company holidays in winter. Those are difficult with children.
Erza: What do you like to do in your free time?
Willy: We have a rustico in Ticino. We are often there on weekends, enjoying family time and renovating. My great passion is my mountain bike, to which I attach a race number from time to time to put some energy back into it. In winter I usually build a piece of furniture and then there is an old Lotus in the garage which is being completely restored.
