Photo of the week: Photo shooting DXCargo

On 22 October 2020, on a sunny afternoon, the photo shooting with the KYBURZ DXCargo of the Swiss Post took place. Daniel Honegger was our model. Fabienne Senn and Jasmin Giger were always on Dani's heels with their cameras - equipped with a KYBURZ DXS and a PAH, one of these dynamic photos was taken. We will use the resulting pictures for the new DXP/DXC brochure. So be curious - some great photos were taken.

Our workshop becomes mobile

Last week, Zopfi completed the new workshop car for service. The workshop car is equipped with all the important spare parts. This gives the service technician the possibility to carry out all work on site.

Not only we can benefit from the motorized workshop trolley, but also our customers and interested parties can buy it from us. The workshop trolley will be included in the revised eTrolley brochure. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

Power to roll

Power to roll is a trailer that can carry electrical and mechanical charges. The first trailer we realized has a capacity of 2.8 kWh. These batteries are charged either by the built-in 120W solar system or by a charger from the wall socket. The trailer can deliver 5V, 21V or 230V.

On Friday, November 13, 2020, the Power to roll was in use to provide the necessary energy during the first test run of the boat DXB H1. For example, the batteries of the drone were charged, a coffee machine was operated and the boat's battery was recharged. Power to roll has passed its test with flying colors.

Technical data:

Solar charge capacity 80W
Power output

230V / 3,5 kW
12 V / 10A
5V / 15A

Moving electronics engineer

Now the time had come: On Wednesday, November 11th, the team of electronics engineers moved from Freienstein to Embrach on the Industriestrasse. It took 5 months until the new office was ready to move in. Together with René Stoll, the team was able to furnish the office. This was important - for example, there was an ESD floor (Electro Static Discharge), which is able to discharge electrostatic charges in a controlled manner. Special tools and tables were also needed. Currently, the team is three (Daniel Schär, Thomas Baumann, and Fabio Mathis). At the beginning of December Jennifer Häusler and Yunus Ruff will also move to Embrach. So it comes about that all electronics technicians are in one office - a real electronics competence center is being created, which Daniel Schär will head from the beginning of December.

We wish you much success in the newly furnished office!

Object of the week: Main contactor

It is basically a simple component: the main contactor. But nothing works without it. With the main contactor the "big" current in KYBURZ vehicles is switched on and off.

When the throttle is turned, a weak current (switching current) flows through the main contactor and generates a magnetic field there, which then shifts a magnetic metal part by a few millimeters, thus closing the circuit of the traction current. If the switching current drops out, a spring pushes the metal part back and the traction current is interrupted.

This is mandatory for vehicles and systems with high voltages. Although KYBURZ vehicles run at low voltage, it is still safer to install the main contactor. The only 7 cm high component is with approx. 500 g heavier than it looks at first sight.

Our currently installed main contactor is produced in England by the Albright company. Previously, since the introduction of the asynchronous motor, we have used the main contactors from the Italian company Ravioli. But as we increased the electrical power over the years, the load on the component increased. Due to the greater heating, failures occurred. One speaks of "getting stuck" of the contactor if the contact cannot be released by the spring. Often, simply tapping on it helps, the contact is released and the defect can be temporarily resolved. For a serious repair, only a replacement will help.

Aus unserer Entwicklungsabteilung: Trolley

On Monday, November 16, we participated in a tender of the German Postal Service. This is a non-motorized trolley. We read the tender conditions carefully and then submitted our solution. The result is a further development of our proven eTrolley 7+1 and we are very curious to see how well we will compare to our competitors. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Fleet Management for Boats

Unlimited possibilities - that's what our Fleet Management System has to offer.

Last week we reported on the first test drive with the DXB H1. What we didn't tell you then: the boat is equipped with Fleet Management. In addition to the first test drive, the first data transfer with Fleet Management was successful. This week the fleet team was able to evaluate data such as speed, engine temperature, or battery temperature. But also the driven kilometers and the route can be seen.

Outlook spring 2021
Martin Kyburz's boat will be equipped with Fleet Management until spring 2021 to collect even more data. Do you think that was already enough? Then imagine someone breaking open the door on your boat and clearing the lower deck. With a door switch and Fleet, you get an SMS on your cell phone when the door is opened by unauthorized persons. This way you can react quickly and perhaps prevent the worst. Another scenario could be that a bad storm comes up. A ship is designed to survive in a storm, which works by pumping out the water that accumulates in the back of the ship (bilge) with a bilge pump. This prevents a ship from sinking. The fleet can read the water level in the bilge and the activity of the bilge pump. A failure of the bilge pump or a too-high water level can be detected early.

Do you know yourself in the shipping business or do you have someone in your circle of friends? Or do you have your own inputs that help the further development? Then contact the project manager Andreas Künzle directly.

Health tip of the week

Today I present to you another of the so-called ten steps to mental health:

Stay active. Here are a few ideas...

  • Dance to your favorite music in your living room until you are out of breath
  • Do a great autumn/winter cleaning - muck out the kitchen / the closet
  • Try rope skipping and get into a sweat
  • Make the garden/balcony winterproof - supply garden furniture/pots/grill

Of course, these tips can be extended indefinitely. There are no limits to imagination and creativity. Just try it out!

We support Soulman

Who is Soulman and what does he do? Soulman is an association that was founded in 2017. The head of the association David Spielmann is on the road as Soulman. He offers his time to seniors. This is very important work because many older people are often alone and lonely. So they are happy about a visit or a walk with Soulman and are grateful if they get help with shopping or doctor's appointments.

We have delivered five C12s to Soulman at a special price. His joy is very big because now he can surprise seniors with a vehicle and make them happy.

Since the beginning, the association has been supported by large patronage and is supported by many volunteers who do unpaid work.

We are happy to be able to make a contribution to this great project.

A day in the life of Andreas Zopfi - Zopfi sets the tone

Erza Mehmeti: How long have you been with KYBURZ?

Andreas Zopfi: I have been working at KYBURZ since 01.11.2014.

Erza: What are your activities?

Zopfi: I work in the service department as a workshop manager. My tasks include scheduling employees and work orders. The final acceptance of the finished vehicles is also part of my activities.

Erza: What is your typical daily routine?

Zopfi: After a cup of coffee early in the morning I start my work. I provide cost estimates for accident vehicles. I look for solutions for spontaneous hit and run actions. Sometimes I also attend meetings and give basic training for service partners. In the evening I make the work schedule for the next day.

Erza: What do you like? What do you like less?

Zopfi: Definitely the weekend! :-) ...fun on the side... I like that it is always varied and that we always have new challenges. No day is like the other. For something negative, I would have to think long and hard.

Erza: What do you like to do in your free time?

Zopfi: In my free time I like to make music because I'm in a band and I sing. I also like to ride my motorcycle.

Erza: You said you are in a band, can you tell me more about it?

Zopfi: I am the singer of the Hard Rock Band XII Gallon Overdose since 2014. We have an average of 20 concerts per year. Once a week we have band rehearsal, we practice and drink a few beers together.

Weekly update - communication is important!

Every Tuesday at 13.30, all salespeople, B2B and B2C meet with a representative of the back office, marketing, and fleet online for an update.

Each section reports on the activities of the past week. The analysis of sales figures and new addresses is also an important part of the update.

The most important project progress and activities are reported from the international business customer area.

18.11.2020, MJ

Did you know that we have sales projects going on outside of Switzerland? Here is the list of them:

Change box system in test use at Rikscha Taxi Schweiz AG

On Monday, November 16, 2020, the time had come - one KYBURZ DXP, one interchangeable box trailer (PAHW) and 3 interchangeable boxes (WB) made their way to Rikscha Taxi Schweiz AG in Bern. The company offers both efficient logistics solutions and adventure tours through various city centers in Switzerland. Rickshaw Taxi is now testing our interchangeable box system for 3 months. During this time we will be in constant contact with the team and receive continuous feedback, which is very helpful for the development of the product. The vehicle, trailer, and interchangeable boxes are also equipped with our Fleet Management System. Rickshaw Taxi has access to the fleet data during the test period, so Rickshaw Taxi can optimize the logistic processes to the swap box system.

Today, Monday, another test vehicle was delivered to Basel - here it is a KYBURZ DXP with a fixed box trailer (PAHF).

We wish Rickshaw Taxi a lot of fun with the testing and are looking forward to the feedback and evaluation!

Basic training B-Partner

Last Wednesday, mechanics from various KYBURZ customers attended the B-Partner basic training course in Freienstein. As B-Partner they do maintenance and also have the tools to analyze and solve electronic problems.

Alin Labus, for example, works for the city of Kreuzlingen. He is a car mechanic and does vehicle maintenance for trucks, tractors, cars, and the three KYBURZ vehicles owned by the city. "I've already found out a lot myself", he says during the lunch break, "and I've always received competent and good answers to all my questions on the phone".

A DXP for the Postal Museum in Finland

We may feel honored because Finland would like to exhibit a DXP in the Postimuseo.

How did it come about? As you surely know, Finland has been using DXP and eTrolleys from us since 2017. Finland is very satisfied with our products. The fleet manager from the Finnish Post Office, Kari Tuomola, in cooperation with the museum curator Suvi Jalli from Postimuseo, sent us a request for an exhibition vehicle. Of course, we were immediately hooked on this project and decided to donate the DXP. Our relationship with the Finnish Post Office is perfect, and we are happy to see how enthusiastic and proud they are of our products.

Joriek and his team built a DXP 1:1 but did not use the batteries or the motor. The front and rear lights are controlled by a mains connection. The vehicle will be delivered to Finland next week by freight mail.

This makes this vehicle the first DXP in a museum outside of Switzerland. Bravo!

19.11.2020, JGE

Good to know:

The Postimuseo is located in Tampere, which is about 179.5 km northeast of Helsinki. It is a university town between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. The city has about 226'696 inhabitants and lively cultural life.

Our customer notime in the NZZ with our change box trailer

Our largest customer, Swiss Post, is constantly thinking about the future. Various tests are carried out in the process. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) published a report about "SameDay delivery" in Zurich. Swiss Post, notime, and Digitec Galaxus are currently doing a trial and deliver ordered goods the same day without additional packaging material.

Fast delivery and sustainability are the basic ideas. Of course, KYBURZ vehicles are in use at notime, a subsidiary of the Swiss Post. A picture of a KYBURZ PAHW (interchangeable box trailer) is the big eye-catcher.

Our Samaritans

At the end of September, we held an internal course for emergency helpers. One person from each department took part in this course. The course was very instructive and you could learn a lot directly from practical examples.

Here you can find our trained Samaritans:

One year ago this week...

I would like to give you a review of what happened at KYBURZ this week a year ago.

This week a year ago we were at the transport-CH fair in Bern. The fair lasts 3 days and is mainly aimed at the transport and logistics industry. Many decision-makers from all over Switzerland come to this fair to get information.

We presented new products like the ePedelec or the DXC. On the test drive, the visitors had the opportunity to test our eRods, which often made shining eyes. We were able to make many interesting contacts, which became projects.

Review 2020 & Outlook 2021

Due to Covid-19, practically all trade shows were canceled this year. The outlook for 2021 does not bode well either. We have no trade shows planned for next year. We don't expect to have any trade shows again until the end of the year at the earliest, but it's not clear whether it will be the same at that time.

For this reason, we have taken up the challenge and put on new horses. Already at the beginning of the year, we started with the series Tech Talk. Every week Martin Kyburz gives an insight into what is going on at KYBURZ. But this is not the end of the story. Internally we are working hard on our presence in video conferences, on the one hand with technology and on the other hand with the presence of ourselves. Further projects are also in progress, you can read more about them in the coming weeks.
