Farewell to Andreas Schaffner

Dear Andy

On 16 October 2013 you started working for us as a welder in the service department. You brought a lot of experience with you. As a trained florist, trained motorcycle mechanic and technical salesman you had already built custom bikes and also ran your own restaurant.

With us you welded several DXP and PAH chassis and very soon you became a supervisor for the apprentices. You took care of our apprentice Joshi very patiently and with dedication.

You really got going when you took over the responsibility for the production of the eRods. First you were with the eRod production at Shedweg and then in the new eRod hall at Industriestrasse. Over the years you have built several eRods together with different people. Also, when the eRod team became smaller, we could rely on you. In addition to the production, you also took over the responsibility for the service and repair work. You were happy when the other mechanics next door moved into Embrach and said it was nice to be surrounded by more mechanics again.

Many customers have assembled their own eRod under your guidance in the building seminar. You never wanted to be the center of attention, but you were proud of your work and of the eRods.

When it came to taking pictures, you mostly avoided taking photos and when you did come into the picture, you liked to stand in the back.

We were able to collect many great memories together:

  • The test drives on the slopes in Steisslingen, where we had to convince you to come along.
  • The laps we did together on the race track in Anneau du Rhin, where you gave it your all and also did a few pirouettes in the corners.
  • The time when you gave up smoking, swapped your cigarettes for carrots and nibbled on your carrots like a rabbit.
  • How you sometimes brought your giant schnauzer "Imperator" into the company and how lovingly you treated him.
  • The mountain race in Hittnau, where you cheered us on together with your family, or the night shift when we had to finish the eRod Offroad for the car show.

During the last weeks and months you were often very deep in thought and we saw your mischievous grin less and less often. It was always important to you that you were not a burden to anyone or in the way. Maybe that was also the reason why you didn't want to tell us what was bothering you. In the end you decided to quietly sneak out of life. We are sad that we lost you.

We are grateful for the beautiful moments we were able to experience with you and for everything you did for us. We will keep you in good memory - as this loving and considerate person you were.

Our deepest sympathy goes to your family and friends.

Goodbye Andy, we miss you.

Your eRod family

Farewell
The funeral service will take place on Wednesday, December 2, at 14.00 hours at the Schwandenholz cemetery, Seebacherstrasse 130 in 8052 Zurich.
If you would like to say goodbye to Andy, please contact Laurence Nève:

PLUS2: The production runs

The production of the first PLUS2 on the industrial road started last week! Joriek and Tino have installed the renewed and, compared to the "old" PLUS, more extensive cabling. The FVP-Print is now installed under the seat and the PLUS2 now also uses the proven FCA640 charger.

The new casing parts are already available in the pre-assembly. The new control system from Curtis makes it possible to use the Engage 6 for the display. And there are also new possibilities for installing the Fleet.

We will keep you informed and are looking forward to it!

Congratulations to Erik

Our Erik Wilhelm has successfully completed his training as Functional Safety Engineer. This means that from now on Erik can independently inspect all our electrical systems that fulfill a safety function. Of course, there are plenty of these in the autonomous vehicle projects in research. But Erik can also approve all the other systems that are developed in the company. Do you have any questions? Please contact Erik directly with the link:

3sat visits KYBURZ

Our battery recycling plant has made a big splash across the border. This is how 3sat became aware of us with their well-known television program "nano". Last Friday the time had come and the production duo Katrin and David came to visit us.

It was shot and interviewed for about four hours. In addition to the system, Martin Kyburz and Olivier Groux were also in focus. Olivier, as our project manager, naturally accompanied the whole shooting. A production like this is very complex. The television show lasts a total of 30 minutes. The article about us is dated 5 minutes.

Who is nano?

The nano team makes visions of the future tangible. They broadcast worldwide current reports on science and research. The program is entertaining and informative. Scientists are regularly invited to their studio or visited by them.

The importance of this television program is very great for us. It proves to us that we have made a difference with our project and now we get the opportunity to tell the world about it.

The contribution will probably be broadcasted this year. As soon as we know the definite date, you will find it here in the house newspaper.

The mobile coffee bar - eTrolley Race

The mobile coffee station enriches our showroom since last week. This refreshing project was realized by the artist Raphaël Diener. He had already created objects out of 2ndLife material, which were exhibited during the CE-Congress in the Shedhalle. We will report on these works later.

The guests, who will be welcomed in the showroom from now on, can be served with coffee and cool drinks from the mobile bar. Since the Race-Bar is built on an e-trolley, it can also be rented and is a practical eye-catcher for every party. If you have any questions regarding the operation, reservation or purchase of the illustrious bar, please contact Luca Botta.

Object of the week: The bucket seat

The age of the bucket seat began more than 10 years ago with the first DXP at KYBURZ. For that time we have been purchasing the seats manufactured in America from the importer Oscar Fäh. For the three-wheeled KYBURZ vehicles, the seat is standard, except for the MaXX and the DXP for Australia Post.

For a few years, the KYBURZ logo is embossed in the seat and the seat switch is already installed by the manufacturer. The connection of the seat switch cable and the assembly of the seat box with four screws is done by the pre-assembly staff.

In 2020 KYBURZ ordered about 2000 seats. Many of them were installed on new vehicles. The number of seats shipped via the webshop as replacements for worn seats has fallen massively as stronger material (vinyl) is now used.

The ominous hole at the transition from seat to backrest is described on the supplier's homepage as: "central drain".

OE Seminar

The Extended Executive Management (EGL) meets regularly for a two-day seminar called OE (Organizational Development). At this seminar, current topics are discussed. The last seminar was held in Winterthur in Banana City and focused on the 2021 budget. Under the leadership of our CFO Peter Glanzmann, we jointly analyzed the financial situation of 2021 and derived possible areas for action. We considered how we could boost sales and where we could save money.

We also decided to admit Hanspeter Wepfer from Fleet and Roman Krüsi from Purchasing to EGL. Welcome to EGL!

In this workshop, we have laid the foundation to steer our company well through the challenging year 2021. We are looking forward to working with all of you on the upcoming topics.

EGL gets reinforcement

Hanspeter Wepfer from Fleet and Roman Krüsi from Purchasing are new to the extended management team.

Hanspeter, a trained machine mechanic and electrical engineer, originally wanted to sell Martin a fleet system from another company. Martin had made him a better offer: So it happened that he joined KYBURZ in 2015 and took over the fleet activities, which had been managed by Flurin until then. Today, Hanspeter manages the Fleet Team in Embrach. Before that, he worked for 13 years as a software engineer and project manager for a company in the textile electronics industry. He likes to spend his free time in nature. Jogging and soccer are also among his passions.

Roman joined KYBURZ in 2013 after his part-time bachelor's degree. The trained business economist now heads the purchasing team in Embrach. Working with people is very important to Roman. He is satisfied when his team works well together and when all the material for a smooth production is available. His hobbies are jogging, hiking and travelling.

We wish both of them a good cooperation in the EGL :-)

New structure of data storage in service

In order to clean up the folder structure of the service department, we have created a concept and prepared the new folder structure in the past weeks.

On Saturday 28.11.2020 Lisa, Éric, Matthias and Flurin together transferred the complete service directory into the new structure.

From now on, the data in the service is stored according to the K5220 guideline. These rules and regulations must be observed when files are stored in the service in the future.

The super users for the folder structure are available for questions:

charging stations: Also with solar power

Next to the main entrance in Freienstein, there have been three charging stations to charge an electric car with alternating current (type 2) for quite some time. Now the electricity for the rearmost station comes from the in-house solar system. The solar cells on the roof feed the stationary battery storage. If available, the electricity can be drawn from this, even without sunshine, with a maximum capacity of 9 kW of electricity.

The charging stations are public and registered in the various registers. KYBURZ employees, visitors, and also strangers with electric cars are happy if the parking spaces in front of the charging stations are free. Please put away fully charged electric vehicles. At the right charging stations, as well as at the charging station on the wall of the former eRod workshop, the maximum power output is 25 kW.

Charging stations at the KYBURZ locations in Embrach on Industriestrasse and on Tannenstrasse are in planning. For KYBURZ vehicles there are household sockets (type 13) at the various locations, which may be used free of charge.

KyBee: The first ride of the functional model

A small load vehicle with a payload of up to 600 kg is the target. Two Euro pallets or a box with a capacity of approx. 2 m³ find room on the loading area.

Since August this year a small team around Luca Zimmermann has been working on the development of the new KYBURZ vehicle. Last week the first run with the functional model could be carried out. The drive and the rear suspension are from the eRod. So there is no lack of power. The concept with three wheels and a steering angle of almost 45° allows an amazing maneuverability.

The experiences of the first rides show that the concept works. As expected, it will still take a lot of work before the vehicle is ready for use. KyBee is intended for delivery services, postal services or anywhere else where loads need to be transported.

As the name suggests, KyBee is intended to be another reliable working bee from KYBURZ.

KYBURZ photo studio

Since July 2015 the company KYBURZ has owned its own photo studio. You have never seen it before?
You will find our photo studio in the showroom at Shedweg in Freienstein. If you take a closer look, you can see the flash unit hanging from the ceiling. The complete photo studio can be set up in about 30 minutes at lightning speed. We are well equipped and can produce high-quality photos of our vehicles ourselves.

You are missing a good studio photo of a product? Then contact the marketing team.

KYBURZ is already implementing what Renault plans

The French car manufacturer is planning a new production site in Flins according to the motto "turn old into new" or in the words of Renault "Re-FACTORY". The concept behind it: The concept behind this is to recycle and sell "old" electric cars, to place batteries that no longer provide sufficient power for cars in other applications, and the associated activities for efficient resource management. The fact that we at KYBURZ are always one step ahead of the times is nothing new and is once again confirmed with this project from Renault. We are pleased that a major player is dealing with recycling management. As you know, our philosophy is quite clear that knowledge is there to be shared and that everyone should benefit from everyone else in order to protect the environment. It will certainly be exciting to see how the automotive industry will change in the coming months and years.

27.11.2020, ERN/FAS

Good to know:

Did you know that Renault representatives visited us about a year ago to study our concept?
Currently, Mercedes representatives visit us regularly. We are excited and look forward to the future!

Fleet Training

At the end of November, we were able to welcome four employees to the fleet training. The aim of the training: the participants know our individual Fleet products, can identify potential customers, and establish contact with the Fleet Team.

The Fleet Management System comprises several functions:

  • Vehicle reservation: vehicles or other machines can be reserved quickly and easily. The system automatically generates a complete where-used list of the product and the logbook.
  • Automated accounting: Operating times and machine hours are recorded using a Fleet Box, transferred to the Fleet Management System, and evaluated. This means that data is available online and in report form for various accounting purposes.
  • Speedometer Remote Download: The driving times of truck drivers are transferred to the Fleet Management System. They are available for company-related evaluations and for the reports required by law.
  • Driver and vehicle safety: Our Fleet Management System offers several safety functions: Emergency call switch, theft protection, and vehicle tilt alarm.
  • Driving analysis and remote diagnosis: All essential vehicle and equipment data are transferred to the Fleet Management System and are available for troubleshooting and evaluations.

For the most practical experience possible, the participants were able to test individual functions, such as the emergency call switch, live.

Would you like to know more about the Fleet Management System? Then contact Eveline Tuor by e-mail.

We congratulate Mike Jun on his wedding

Mike got married two weeks ago. We congratulate with all our heart and wish the newlyweds all the best!

You're probably asking yourself now, who is this Mike?

The story goes like this: Mike Jun worked for our former battery supplier Calb and was responsible for us. Over the years, the business relationship has led to repeated meetings in Switzerland and China. Mike has recently left the Calb company. When we found out about this, we asked him to work for us. Mike is a great asset for us, because he knows the Chinese market. Since he has been working in sales for the battery manufacturer Calb in the past years, he has important contacts in the battery industry. We will not get to know Mike personally so quickly, as he works for us from Shanghai.

Basic training B-Partner in French

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, a basic level B training course was held in French. We hosted 3 employees of the new partner for Geneva (M.S.R) and a new employee of the existing partner Chapatte SA.
M.S.R will take over the support of postal vehicles in the Geneva area from 2021. Until now, the company DBS was responsible for this. As this company will cease to exist at the end of the year, they will hand over the responsibility for the approx. 700 KYBURZ DXP & PAH in and around Geneva to M.S.R. We wish M.S.R much success!

In spite of the cold weather, the partners did not miss the opportunity to take a ride on the eRod after the training.

The eRod prominent at the main entrance

Right next to the main entrance of the Museum of Transport in Lucerne, a large picture of the eRod hangs on the outside wall. The beaming faces of children and fathers arouse curiosity and motivate visitors to the museum.

For more than 3.5 years a real eRod has been standing as a photo spot in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. Big and small visitors can sit in the vehicle for Selfies. Good light is provided.

Our products have an aura!

Market research in Peru

Last Tuesday, November 24, Mr. Schnizler visited us. He has lived and worked in Peru for a long time. Therefore he knows the market. He sees potential for our vehicles in Peru and wants to make first market clarifications. The first step is to evaluate a suitable local partner. As soon as we have found this partner, the next steps will follow. We will report on this at this point.

Siemens, KYBURZ and STU build autonomous eRod

SIEMENS has already purchased several eRods from us to test and demonstrate your products on the vehicles. SIEMENS has provided an eRod to STU (Slovak University of Technology) to convert it into an autonomous vehicle.

During the first autonomous test drive, the vehicle actually drifted from the track into the gravel bed in a tight curve. This could be fixed and finally, the eRod drove the complete race track "Slovakia-Ring" on its own.

There are more exciting projects for SIEMENS with our eRods. Soon reports will follow here in our company newspaper.

20.11.2020, LAN

Good to know:

Slovakia Ring is a motorsport race track near the village of Orechová Potôň in Slovakia, about 36 km from the capital Bratislava. It was built from 2008 to 2009 and is the first purpose-built race track in Slovakia. The track length is 5'922 m.

Do you have questions about this project? Laurence Nève will be happy to answer them.

A day in the life of Heinz Romer

Erza Mehmeti: How long have you been with KYBURZ?

Heinz Romer: I have been working for KYBURZ since 27.08.2019.

Erza: What are your activities?

Heinz: My activities are the preparation of 2nd Life vehicles. I also help out with problems.

Erza: What is your typical daily routine?

Heinz: I arrive in Freienstein at 07.00 am and start my work. This includes the preparation of the 2nd Life vehicles, such as the rust treatment I do and the painting. As usual, I go home at about 17.30 o'clock.

Erza: What do you like? What do you like less?

Heinz: I like the philosophy of the KYBURZ company, in general, the work we all do. I also like that you have the chance to realize your ideas here. There is nothing negative, otherwise, I wouldn't be here either!

Erza: What do you like to do in your free time?

Heinz: In my free time I like to repair motorcycles and then ride them.

Erza: You had the idea with the boat to make a project out of it, how did it come about?

Heinz: It was heard that boats are to be rented out at Klöntalersee. Since we had a boat standing around here, I had the idea to make a project out of it. So that we can spare the lake a bit.

Erza: Do you have any other ideas that you would like to tackle as a project next?

Heinz: Yes, I still have many ideas. At the moment I am thinking about handicapped vehicles.

That was the last PLUS I

As you already know, the PLUS II will soon be running through production for the first time. Therefore the production of the PLUS I vehicles have been stopped since 17.09.2020. We still had a few PLUS I in stock and in use as a demo or rental vehicles.

Now the time had come and also the last PLUS I has left our warehouse. Tobias Wunderli was the consultant and made Cécile Bossert-Hüsler very happy.

The vehicle was delivered in the special color ivory and equipped with the option Navi device.

We wish Cécile Bossert-Hüsler a lot of fun with her new vehicle and a good trip!

Internal Audit

Last week, Philipp and Fillo began conducting the internal audits. What exactly are internal audits?

An internal audit is a self-check of all work processes. Since we are certified vehicle manufacturers, we have to write down all the work processes. We have filed them in our "Kyburz Management System" (KMS). You can find all these descriptions of all areas in the whole company on our data storage under/Volumes/Platform/00 KYBURZ Management System/10 Workflows

During an internal audit, Philipp and Fillo go through the company and ask you about your work steps. They compare these with the steps described in the KMS. If everything matches, if you work exactly as described in the KMS, the result of the audit is successful. If your work deviates from the described procedures, they say detention. Either you must change your procedures or you must have recorded this in the KMS.

Next spring, an external auditor will also come and check the same procedures. The more precisely we work and the better our internal auditors check, the fewer external complaints we have. You too can help.

In the picture next to it, you can see a flowchart that shows the workflow "Create contracts". Can you read it and understand how we create contracts? If not, please ask your supervisor.

Fleet Management System - Vehicle Reservation

For almost a year now, we have been reserving all vehicles in our own fleet using the reservation system developed by our fleet team.

What are the benefits of this system?

A very simple administration of all reservations. It is transparent at all times who made the reservation, who the driver is and where the journey is going. If a car is not returned in perfect condition, it is very easy to determine the last driver.

A complete log of the vehicle's individual trips is created, as well as a log of all trips that each driver has made. Therefore it is no longer necessary to keep a logbook by hand as it used to be. The log generated by the fleet is recognized by the tax authorities.
