Photo of the week: Our mobile Christmas tree
Every year, our Christmas tree is back in the showroom in Freienstein. This time, however, in a slightly different way: it is mobile and stands on an eTrolley. So we could easily move it into our photo studio and take pictures.
We wish you all happy holidays and a good ride into 2021.

3200 vehicles produced this year
A successful production year comes to an end. Never before in the history of KYBURZ Switzerland AG so many vehicles were produced. More than 3'200 vehicles were manufactured in 2020 at the Tannenstrasse and Industriestrasse in Embrach. This is an impressive 1'000 vehicles more than last year. One thousand Australians have already been built by the end of July, dispatched, and transported to the destination country by one hundred 40-foot containers.
All vehicles produced in 2020 placed one behind the other would result in a distance of about 8 km: One vehicle behind the other from Tannenstrasse to the airport!
Due to this year's Corona situation, there were some hurdles to overcome. Difficulties were mainly felt by our customers and suppliers. Transport costs shot up, means of transport (containers, etc.) were hardly available and punctual delivery was made difficult. Despite these circumstances, production orders for this year were completed according to plan.
In addition, four new vehicles were integrated into production: The Maxx 2.0, the DXC 1.1 for the Swiss Post Office and the Finnish Post Office, the eTrolley 5.0, and the Plus 2.4.
This would never have been possible without the support of the hardworking logistics team and our webshop. They handled almost 12,000 internal material orders. Many trucks were loaded and unloaded by them and the productions were supplied with material.
Finally, a big thank you to all the people involved, including those whose great work has not been mentioned in this text.

eTrolleys for the city of Winterthur
On Friday, December 18, 2020, Jürg Geiser delivered two eTrolleys to the city of Winterthur. For the cleaning in the old town and the emptying of the public waste and dog waste bins, tried and tested "hand trolleys" have been used for decades. In order to reduce the physical strain on the employees, KYBURZ delivers the "hand trolley" of the 21st century: an eTrolley with a tiltable body.
A test phase had to be postponed several times because of Corona until it finally worked in late spring. Right from the start, the "street cleaners" found the eTrolley appealing and practical. It is simple and intuitive to use. Since the development department did not have the capacity to create an offer construction, Jürg created a drawing for the construction. In collaboration with Ivan Schickli, construction drawings were created and Benno Schlatter manufactured the superstructure. Jürg and the Team ePedelec then took over the assembly of the eTrolley (based on the eTrolley Finnish Post).
Now the eTrolleys will hit the streets and pedestrian zones of Winterthur. There will probably still be some improvements to be made before KYBURZ can offer this new municipal vehicle to other public works departments. In any case, the employees of the Winterthur Civil Engineering Office were delighted to receive it at the depot.

Tow trailer
Necessity is the mother of invention, but inventors know no need. Like Heinz Romer, they make a virtue of it.
During the daily rust treatment, the finished DXP's had to be laboriously pushed from the paint room to the reconditioning line. The removed batteries, as well as the dismantled handlebars, made the transport a challenge - even an ordeal. Heinz developed three different towing devices. In the end, the little red utility vehicle won the race and was an all-around winner. Last week the prototype was turned into a product, which can now be ordered for CHF 850.- in the webshop.

Object of the week: CALB battery 240 Ah
The CALB battery with a capacity of 240 Ah is the power source of the DXP 5 and was delivered with these vehicles in thousands to the Swiss and Australian Post. KYBURZ has installed batteries from the supplier CALB with capacities from 20 to 240 Ah over the years. Several KYBURZ employees have already visited CALB (China Aviation Lithium Battery Co., Ltd.) in Henan, China, and reported great cleanliness, a high degree of process automation, and high-quality standards.
LiFePO4 stands for the chemistry of the cell. Lithium iron phosphate makes up about 31% of the battery weight. Graphite, copper, and aluminum are the other key ingredients for this battery, which is characterized by the fact that it is more sustainable (e.g. contains no cobalt) than comparable battery types. Other important strengths of this chemistry are longevity, or a high number of cycles, and safety. This battery type does not easily burn.
For purchasing and production planning, batteries from China are a challenge, as they have to be ordered five to six months in advance. Ready-made blocks with several cells are delivered. Packed in wooden or cardboard crates, they are delivered by sea in a container in batches of 400 to 580 blocks.
Our 240 Ah cells were originally developed for an order to be installed in electric buses. Since this order was canceled, CALB stopped producing this type of battery cells and KYBURZ also had to look for a new supplier. Service workers will continue to encounter CALB batteries in KYBURZ vehicles for years to come, thanks to their reliability and durability.

The PLUS II - Nina is optimized
Our autonomous PLUS II "Nina" has received a new steering motor and a new steering clutch. Under the expert hands of Martin Mathis and Oliver Zimmermann, the old steering unit was replaced by the new one. This change was necessary because the old unit could not provide enough power to steer the wheels in all situations. The challenge of this conversion was that the steering unit sits in the middle of the vehicle and is surrounded on all sides by other components, some of which are very sensitive.
What we have now is a 1.2 kW motor with a 51 ratio (orange in the CAD screenshot) and a magnetic gear coupling with a rated transmission torque of 400 Nm (blue in the CAD screenshot). The power from the motor is transmitted by the chain to the bell crank from the PLUS steering system.
The clutch is necessary to disconnect the motor from the steering train when the PLUS is steered by a driver.
Our Nina is now ready to go again for the next tests in the new year!

Good to know:
Magnetic tooth clutch
A magnetic tooth clutch is used to open and close a power connection. The advantage of this type of coupling is that it can be actuated with an electrical signal.

Ab die Post – theater at the Hechtplatz
Our KYBURZ DXP has made it onto the advertising poster for the theater "Ab die Post", which is being shown at the Theater am Hechtplatz.
The theater is about two veteran postmen who have been working together at the same post office for over 30 years. But now, a few years before they retire, they are threatened with losing their jobs for life because the post office is not generating enough revenue.
What the two are now doing to increase sales and save their jobs can be seen at the Theater am Hechtplatz in Zurich from the end of January 2021.

A day in the life of Fadil Hoxha
Erza Mehmeti: How long have you been with KYBURZ?
Fadil Hoxha: I have been working at KYBURZ for 17 years.
Erza: What are your activities?
Fadil: I am the team leader of the production line. I support my team wherever I can. I make sure that the production runs smoothly and immediately find a solution to any problems. The night before, I schedule the employees and the work. I assign each employee a new production step each week so that everyone learns each step. If someone doesn't know a step, I teach the employee that step.
Erza: What is your typical daily routine?
Fadil: I start every morning at 06.30 and begin preparations. At 07:30, production starts on the assembly line. If someone is missing, I organize a person or fill in myself. If there are problems with a vehicle, I take that vehicle out of the line and start looking for the fault and fixing it. At the end of production, I make sure that the assembly line is cleaned up so that the employees can start again the next day. Likewise, every evening between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. I go to all the departments to see if all the doors are closed and the lights are off; until I do that, I can't go to sleep.
Erza: What do you like?
Fadil: I particularly like my team and we have a great working relationship.
Erza: What do you like to do in your free time?
Fadil: In my free time, I like to do things with my family or go for walks with my wife and work in the garden.

Webshop: Model KYBURZ DXP & PAH
A KYBURZ DXP does not fit under the Christmas tree. But a 1:18 scale model does! And a model trailer also belongs to it.
For about four years, the model has been available in a limited series of 1051 pieces. Many are already gone, but for a last-minute Christmas gift there is still enough stock, and the trip to the mall is also eliminated. For the price of CHF 59.70 (incl. VAT), you can bring joy to many a child and adult.
Did you know? Carmen and Philipp were the models for the design of the model figures. They are also depicted in real life on the packaging.
Contact Matthias Röthlin. He will organize that you can buy your model before Christmas.

Prelude to winter service in the canton of Valais - KYBURZ Fleet settles accounts
Winter arrived earlier than in other years. For the winter service vehicles of the canton of Valais - snow plows, salt spreaders, and snow blowers - the heavy snowfall meant major operations. Almost all of the 425 machines were active from the 1st to the 2nd of December and performed a total of 768 operations - all automatically recorded by KYBURZ Fleet.
The expectations on the part of the canton were high, as some optimizations were made last summer, both in the software and in the vehicle installations. For example, all old snowplows without electronic control were retrofitted with a sensor. This allows the plow position (up/down) to be clearly detected on these vehicles as well. This enables the canton to provide 100% proof of winter services performed in the event of insurance inquiries following traffic accidents.
From this season on, there will be no more parallel paper reports. The recording of the service, the verification, and also the release for payment is done completely electronically in the KYBURZ system. 120 users, consisting of road foremen and their supervisors, work with it on the PC or via the app. As a result, inquiries to KYBURZ Fleet Support also increased during this initial phase. Most of the inquiries concerned the new working time and accounting rules, which are stored in the Fleet System according to the specifications of the Canton of Valais. There was very little to correct on the system itself.
In November, the Canton of Valais purchased 15 additional pieces of equipment, which are currently being installed by the employees in the work yards. Let's hope that this expansion of the winter maintenance fleet is a good sign for a white Christmas.

New kitchen on Industriestrasse in Embrach
Finally, after more than half a year at Industriestrasse without a snack/lunch place, the development team has received a new kitchen. Now the team can spend their breaks together again - in the meantime, the team had to find shelter in other departments. We wish the department a lot of joy with the new kitchen :-)
