Photo of the year: Our headquarters in Freienstein

Hauptsitz KYBURZ in Freienstein

In 1996, the first facilities were opened in the former Blumer spinning mill in Freienstein. More and more rooms were added until there was simply not enough space. KYBURZ relocated the production plant for electric vehicles to Tannenstrasse in Embrach. Another facility is located in Embrach at Industriestrasse. Freienstein, however, remains the headquarters. The research department, office work and sales, 2ndLife, after-sales service, accounting, marketing and even the CEO's office have always been located in the old spinning mill in Freienstein.

A visit from Roberto Cirillo

At the beginning of 2020, Roberto Cirillo, CEO of Swiss Post, visited us in Freienstein. Of course, we were very delighted by the visit and proud to be able to present the company and our work to him. The tour started in Freienstein and then went to Embrach to Tannenstrasse to see the manufacturing facilities. Of course, the development department and the eRod production on Industriestrasse were not to be missed. On the final photo from left to right: Peter Glanzmann, Robert Cirillo, Martin Kyburz, Bruno Fankhauser, Martin Jerg.

Swiss Moto 2020

In February, one of the few fairs, the Swiss Moto took place. Also this year we were represented with some vehicles. The eye-catcher was the customized bike from Ali Shabani. Ali designed and built a stylish bike from a DXS 2ndLife, which caught all eyes and sold as a limited edition. In addition to the customized bike, the eRod Fun, eRod Offroad, and a DXCargo were on display. Another DXS 2ndLife graced the entrance hall of the show. It had previously been in use as an emergency vehicle at the Solothurn Film Festival. Some exciting contacts resulted from the show as well as two sales.

The 2000th DXP travels to Australia

By the end of July 2020, the 2000th DXP was produced for Australia Post. Procurement and production (and many others) have done a great job!

The vehicles were transported to the destination country by 40-foot container and the KYBURZ team in Australia took care of distribution, commissioning and handover. We are happy that Australia Post was able to take ownership of the vehicles in time.

Good to know:

Did you know that Australia Post owns the largest electric vehicle fleet on the continent with our vehicles?

KYBURZ WebDesk

For certain customers, such as the Swiss Post, KYBURZ is responsible for the maintenance of the vehicle fleet.

Most work on the vehicles is carried out by our service partners. Our customers can also have warranty work on our vehicles carried out by our certified partners. In order for us to have an overview of what has been repaired on each vehicle, the partners have to record everything that is done on the vehicle in our system.
The partners have to have us approve major work in advance - this also happens via this system.

The system in which partners entered service case information via the Internet was outdated, so we developed the «KYBURZ WebDesk».
In the new«KYBURZ WebDesk», the partner can easily record the work that needs to be done on a vehicle.
He can see directly in the system whether he can do the work or whether something needs to be checked first.
In the WebDesk, you can view the service history, the owner and also the open and completed retrofits for each vehicle.
In addition, all important documents such as instructions, service videos, service folders etc. can be accessed in the WebDesk.

After an extended testing period with a few selected partners, we were able to release the new «KYBURZ WebDesk» for our service partners in Switzerland in June 2020. From 31.12.2020, the old system for registering work will be completely switched off and then all partners.

Good to know:
The «KYBURZ WebDesk» is optimised for use on an iPad. With the iPad, the service mechanic can directly register the necessary work on the vehicle.
He can use the iPad's camera to add pictures of any damage to his report or even scan items and vehicle numbers instead of typing them in.

Automated accounting with Fleet

KYBURZ Fleet has set new standards in the automated billing of winter service operations in the canton of Valais. This functionality is also available in a universal version, virtually off the shelf. Vehicles, machines and equipment can be managed via our system, regardless of brand, and their use can be precisely accounted for.

Operating times, driving distances, consumed resources, operating distances of aggregates, auxiliary engines and much more are recorded. The data recording on the vehicle is carried out by the KYBURZ Fleet Box and sensors connected to it.

Billing-relevant data is processed according to predefined rules and shown in performance and billing reports. If required, the reported performances can be transferred via an interface to an already existing accounting system, e.g. SAP.

Automated billing with Fleet thus enables objective, paperless and prompt invoicing, e.g. also for rental vehicles or construction equipment.

We will tell you more about specific projects in this field in the new year.

ePedelec – Annual review

With the support of a large number of employees, especially procurement and production departments, the small ePedelec team was able to celebrate a special success: The delivery of the pilot series to Deutsche Post AG (DPAG) in October this year. Ten postal delivery workers are in daily use and with amazing performance data: For example, in Karlsruhe on 21 December, a postal worker was on the road for 7.6 hours with our ePedelec. In the process, he covered 29 km on one battery charge and filled 200 letterboxes. But before German postal workers expressed that they did not want to return the four-wheeler, a huge amount of development work had to be done.

The penultimate prototype was only designed in CAD in January of this year. One month later, the chassis construction was already completed and a first presentation at DPAG brought the motivating result of an extremely interested customer.

The first Swiss road approval in the summer made it possible to use it with test customers. Decreasing letter volumes and increasing parcel numbers (an unexpected effect of the pandemic) stimulated the need for large parcel boxes - the solution was found in the adaptation of the «Australia Box». The integration of the FVP print, a brand-new cabling and an almost passed EMC test were important development steps for the final ePedelec version 2.3, whose assembly for the zero series began in mid-September. At the last moment, just before delivery, the integration of the KYBURZ Fleet Management System was also completed.

However, not all December work has been completed yet: A service manual has to be written, the spare parts stock has to be created, the European approval tests have to be passed, sales documentation has to be edited, the list is by far not complete. This means that a very busy year is also coming to an end for the ePedelec team.

10 years of DXP at Swiss Post

After 10 years of using the KYBURZ DXP at Swiss Post, Executive Board member Thomas Baur looks back.

In an interview with «KYBURZ Magazin», he talks about the hurdles and reactions of the delivery staff during the introduction and takes stock.

For short:
«The DXP is a success story for Swiss Post»

DXCargo in serial production

After various intense test runs of the KYBURZ DXC, it made it into series production this year. Around 220 DXCs have already been produced - among others, we were allowed to produce and deliver 50 DXCs for Posti Finland. These were fitted with studded tyres to cope with the weather conditions in Finland.

The DXC is one of several new products that will be running on our series production line starting this year.

A highlight in 2020: The eRod at the slalom race in Röthis

One of the highlights this year was our successful racers, Jenny and Flo. They competed in the Drytech slalom race in Röthis (AT) on 25 July with two eRods.
The eRod was convincing at the race. We didn't have a single failure and the battery lasted until the end. Meanwhile, many of the cars with combustion engines repeatedly struggled with overheating and other problems.

Jenny and Flo drove excellent times, and in the end, Flo took 1st place in our category. We were particularly pleased that they were a lot faster than the Teslas in the group, which have around 400 hp more under the bonnet.

The race in Röthis was part of the Drytech Race Cup. This cup consists of several races that take place throughout the year at different locations in Austria. Next year, Jenny and Flo will compete in these races as an official eRod race team.
We'll keep you updated when the first races will take place...

Good to know:

In slalom racing, a course, which is usually marked out with pylons, is run at least twice. Knocking over or moving a gate limit gives a 10-second penalty. Driving through a gate from the wrong direction or not in the prescribed order: 30 seconds. Skipping a gate and not passing through it by turning around in the prescribed direction will not be scored. Scoring will be based on time, including any penalty seconds. If two drivers have the same time, the time of the last run decides.

KYBURZ Pty. Ltd. Melbourne, Australia

You probably know all our offices in Australia, but do you know what it looks like there? Martin Mathis was in Melbourne last year with Joel Stanzione and Jennifer Imboden and he insisted on making a cool movie about the company.

Circular Economy Symposium 2020

With a lot of commitment and team spirit, the first conference on the topic of circular economy was set up.

The event was aimed at everyone interested in sustainable living and a resource-efficient economy.

Around 100 people accepted our invitation and travelled to Freienstein on 4 September 2020 to listen to presentations held by speakers from the fields of business, research, nutrition and health. In the afternoon, participants had a wide range of workshops to choose from.

Statements from the audience:

the congress had a friendly touch - networking was easy - great, positive day - definitely to be repeated - fine food - visitor-oriented - simple, uncomplicated and excellent.

KYBURZ revolutionises lithium battery recycling

KYBURZ Switzerland is breaking new ground in battery recycling: at the beginning of September, KYBURZ put an innovative plant into operation - the first of its kind in Switzerland. The media response was correspondingly strong.

What is special about our process is the very high recovery rate of 91% of the material and that no chemicals are used.

The recycling process developed in cooperation with Empa and the Welthaupt company is environmentally friendly and offers potential beyond the company's own production.

Field test at Deutsche Post AG

In the middle of november the last four of a total of 10 KYBURZ ePedelec were delivered to Deutsche Post. From Munich to Hamburg, from Karlsruhe to Berlin, i.e. right across the German states, the chainless driven postal delivery vehicles will undergo a long-term field test. With a happy atmosphere, 9 vehicles of the pilot series were lined up in a row and photographed for the latest issue of the company newspaper before delivery to the neighboring country. A total of 15 vehicles were produced - three copies for further customers at home and abroad and two more for testing and certification of European guidelines.

KYBURZ Service network

KYBURZ is not the only company that can repair and maintain our vehicles. We have certified service partners all over the world. This means that our customers do not necessarily have to take their vehicle to Freienstein to have a service executed. It also allows us to efficiently manage the more than 6,000 DXPs at Swiss Post, which are distributed throughout Switzerland.

Most of our sales partners are also trained as service partners. This means that they can provide customers with the best possible advice and the customer can take the vehicle to be serviced where they bought it.

There are different levels for the service partners. Depending on the partner's skills and infrastructure, their mechanics are trained to Level A, B or C.

C – Partners can replace all wearing parts, such as tyres, carry out simple repairs and make diagnoses.
B – Partners can carry out all repair and maintenance work on the vehicle, apart from work on the structure (chassis).
A – Partners can carry out all work on the vehicle up to and including changing the chassis (complete dismantling and reassembly of the vehicle).

In 2020, we conducted Level B basic training with about 25 mechanics from 10 different companies and Level C training with about 30 postmen from Swiss Post.

The unknown side of «Nina»

«Nina» is full of secrets. In September, the research team invited Martin Kyburz to take the first autonomous ride in the KYBURZ PLUS2 Autonomous «Nina». The following film was created. Be sure to watch it with sound until the end. The secret of the «Ice-Edition» will only be revealed at the end.

By the way: «Nina» is also on the KYBURZ homepage with lots of additional information:

The first PLUS II stand on the ground

The first two vehicles were finished being assembled in PLUS II production last week and are on the ground. The wide mudguards of the PLUS II catch the eye. The wider tyres are conspicuous and if you look closely, you will discover the impressive wheel adapters.

A lot of things worked out during the first assembly. The camera for safe reversing is nicely fitted in the centre under the tailgate. The doors have been redesigned. Inside, it has a handle for opening, as we know it from the car. The question that kept coming up, "Is the part here yet?" could finally be answered with "Yes".

We thank the PLUS team from development, production and purchasing for their performance and are convinced that the PLUS II will soon find many admirers and buyers.

3200 vehicles produced this year

A successful production year comes to an end. Never before in the history of KYBURZ Switzerland AG so many vehicles were produced. More than 3'200 vehicles were manufactured in 2020 at the Tannenstrasse and Industriestrasse in Embrach. This is an impressive 1'000 vehicles more than last year. One thousand Australians have already been built by the end of July, dispatched, and transported to the destination country by one hundred 40-foot containers.

All vehicles produced in 2020 placed one behind the other would result in a distance of about 8 km: One vehicle behind the other from Tannenstrasse to the airport!

Due to this year's Corona situation, there were some hurdles to overcome. Difficulties were mainly felt by our customers and suppliers. Transport costs shot up, means of transport (containers, etc.) were hardly available and punctual delivery was made difficult. Despite these circumstances, production orders for this year were completed according to plan.
In addition, four new vehicles were integrated into production: The Maxx 2.0, the DXC 1.1 for the Swiss Post Office and the Finnish Post Office, the eTrolley 5.0, and the Plus 2.4.

This would never have been possible without the support of the hardworking logistics team and our webshop. They handled almost 12,000 internal material orders. Many trucks were loaded and unloaded by them and the productions were supplied with material.

Finally, a big thank you to all the people involved, including those whose great work has not been mentioned in this text.
