Object of the week: magnetic brake

For 30 years, with a few exceptions (eRod, trailer, and CLASSIC 30), all KYBURZ vehicles have been equipped with an automatic parking brake. They remain stationary after braking. This makes work much easier for delivery personnel and is a safety factor for senior citizens.

When the vehicle comes to a standstill, the brakes are not applied directly to the wheels but to the driven shaft in the transmission, which locks the rear wheels without electricity from the magnetic brake. Springs press the brake pads onto a brake disc. If the vehicle is to drive, the current must flow so that an electromagnet releases the brake against the spring force. The characteristic click should be familiar to all KYBURZ employees. For pushing the vehicle when there is no current, the brake can be unlocked mechanically.

The Swiss electric car: our eRod

A few weeks ago, a report was written about our eRod and published on social media. The article was very well received by readers and generated a lot of buzzes. For example, the French version on LinkedIn received over 1100 clicks.
In the article, Nicolas Dazord talks about his experience with the eRod: "Onboard, the pleasure is right there, and the smile comes before you even turn on the ignition."

08.03.2021, JAG

You can read the full report in German and French here:

Good to know:

Nicolas Dazord applied to work for us as a development engineer a few years ago but then decided to take another job. Nevertheless, he is a big fan of the KYBURZ company and the eRod.

Trip to the Museum of Transport

The Museum of Transport in Lucerne is open again. The current focus exhibition couldn't be more topical: It's all about logistics and supply chains: A topic that is getting a lot of attention due to the pandemic.

KYBURZ is also present at the Museum of Transport: the simulator DXP is being "driven" very often, and the eRod is popular as a photo spot. It attracts so much attention that its picture is even featured in the official Tourism Lucerne city guide to entice travelers to the Museum of Transport.

It's always worth a visit!

Health tip: medicinal plants

Medicinal plants were already very popular with our ancestors. Even today, they are an integral part of naturopathy. Alternative medicine has gained much popularity in recent years. Many of these medicinal herbs can be found right outside our door. You can find more information about these medicinal plants in the document.

03.03.2021, SL

Do you know our Swiss medicinal plants? You can download the list of plants here.

The document is in German.

Do you have questions about the medicinal plants? Then contact Sabine directly.

Good to know:

In the Middle Ages, convent and herb women knew about these plants and their effects. They passed on their knowledge from generation to generation. Even today, not all the secrets of medieval medicine have been revealed in Europe. In contrast to South America, where, for example, alternative medicine is still practiced today in its original form by shamans.

swissplast® takes responsibility

For over 15 years, the plastic parts on KYBURZ vehicles have come from the company swissplast® in Sargans, which now also operates three manufacturing plants in Germany. swissplast® is a specialist in plastic thermoforming and thermoforming.

Now swissplast® has calculated the CO2 emissions of all its products based on the GHG Protocol. It covers all life cycle phases: the extraction of raw materials and packaging, relevant logistics processes, the manufacture of the product, the delivery of the goods to the customer's factory gate, and relevant disposal emissions of the product and packaging. With completely CO2-neutral manufactured products, swissplast® takes a pioneering role among plastic thermoforming companies.

The CO2 emissions are compensated by the support of a wind energy project in India, where swissplast® and its owner Barac S. Bieri are also socially engaged with the Afshan & Barac Bieri - Foundation.

KYBURZ congratulates swissplast® and Barac Bieri for this step.

In the rearview mirror by Lothar Seiler

After seventeen years at Post Company Cars AG, I probably knew all the processes and control levers on the inside of that large organization. My realization was all the more sobering, when I noticed that the dashboard is arranged differently at KYBURZ Switzerland AG. I had to get to know many people and departments, rummage through vast amounts of documents, understand a wide variety of processes, and make friends with the "Pachi." Fortunately, I was surrounded by people who were always willing to help me in word and deed. Therefore, I would like to thank all my colleagues for their support.

With the necessary basics in my luggage, I could finally turn to my desired activities - the sale of our products and services. In this regard, I asked myself the crucial question of reaching potential buyers, especially since inquiries from interested parties by telephone were extremely sparse. Nevertheless, more than half of the offers we have received so far have resulted in an order for a vehicle and, fortunately, no interested party has yet rejected our offer.

To win new customers, I have decided to make active telephone canvassing, which is time-consuming and rarely leads to spontaneous business but does contain valuable address material for further activities. Nevertheless, I prepared isolated communities for a future vehicle presentation, which I will follow up as soon as the current Corona situation allows it again.

Another highlight was, of course, my first vehicle handover to a municipality in eastern Switzerland, not least because the Werkhof employees really enjoy using their KYBURZ DXS and are said to always have a lot of fun with it. The handover of three KYBURZ DXS and PAH-K to the Werkdienst of the city of Lucerne, which I carried out together with Jürg Geiser, was also exciting. After the three Werkhof employees present learned about my professional past, the conversation really got going. There were questions about the vehicles, views on the post office, and much more.

Looking back, I can say that I have already had the opportunity to get to know many new and interesting people at KYBURZ Switzerland AG. Now I am looking forward to our cooperation, in which we will tackle further projects hand in hand.

A large order: what's going on?

If we are allowed to execute a large order, the first thing is to define the specific vehicle equipment, delivery, and payment conditions. With the conclusion of the contract and the bank guarantees, the parts' procurement and production planning become topical. For Australia Post's 2021 order, whose vehicles will be delivered from April, production planning has already been completed. The purchasing department has been working on parts procurement since the beginning of the year.

Only when the vehicles have been made available, a lot of administrative data has been recorded (e.g., chassis numbers, customs tariff numbers, country of origin, delivery date, and place), and customs and shipping documents have been drawn up, can the vehicles be packed and loaded into the container.

The vehicles for Australia Post are shipped in stages in batches of 10 to 11 vehicles in containers. Internally, the office staff records a separate order for each container shipped. For the 1000 vehicles that will travel to Australia this year, there are about 100 internal orders and containers.

For each container, our forwarding department needs the invoice with the noted chassis numbers, the delivery bill, a forwarding order, a dangerous goods declaration, and the correct stickers for each vehicle so that the vehicles are handled correctly en route. Since not all vehicles are sent to the same location but are distributed throughout Australia, they are delivered to different ports in Australia accordingly. These ports are, for example, Brisbane, Sydney, or Fremantle. Once they have arrived at the ports, they are then delivered to the agreed-upon final destination.

Upon arrival at the port in Australia, we receive a "POD" (Proof of Delivery) noted with the date of arrival. This "POD" confirms the receipt of the vehicles. The noted delivery date is then entered back into the Pachi and is decisive for the warranty period.

Although the vehicles' production is our strength, a lot of work is needed all around, which also has to be right for a successful order processing. The cooperation and great effort of all departments enable us to execute such a large order successfully. From the contract negotiation to the procurement of parts and production, to the recording in Pachi and the correct and complete dispatch, many individual steps are required, which must be carried out precisely and with a high level of commitment.

KYBURZ vehicle versions

As a vehicle manufacturer, KYBURZ sells various types of vehicles, for example, the vehicles: DX2, DXP, DXS, DXC, PLUS, eRod, eTrolley, and the ePedelec. There are different versions of these types.

As an example, we take the DXP. There are now 11 versions, with more in the pipeline. Prototypes occupy the first versions. DXP 3.1 was delivered to DPAG, DXP 3.2 was the first 50 vehicles in nationwide use by Swiss Post.

The second major order from Swiss Post was the DXP 4.0, which was delivered with modified onboard electronics and the sloping front loading area visible from the outside. It was followed by the DXP 4.2 with a horizontal loading area and larger batteries. The DXP 5.0, in turn, had a longer chassis. Currently, versions 5.0 and 5.2 are delivered.

How does this numbering come about? The first number is changed in a total renewal (major mechanical change to the chassis or drive). The rear number indicates a facelift or a minor mechanical or electronic development. Superstructures, colors, or just the bigger battery are not deciding for a new version number.

26.02.2021, DH

Good to know:
Also, "older" KYBURZ types already know different versions. The PLUS, which is sold since 2002, is available in 6 versions, 2.3 being the most sold.

A day in the life of Ben Daniels

Erza Mehmeti: How long have you been with KYBURZ?

Ben Daniels: I have been with KYBURZ since September 2019.

Erza: What are your activities?

Ben: I work in the Fleet Management team as a software developer. I mainly deal with the frontend (backend = what happens in the background, frontend = what you see). My activities consist of developing new features or extending existing ones.

Erza: What is your typical daily routine?

Ben: We have a project management tool where all the tasks that need to be done are recorded. These tasks are divided among all developers and are processed according to priority. Every morning we have a meeting with all the developers where we are briefly updated on who is doing what exactly. The rest of the day, I'm busy with programming and exchange ideas with the other developers from time to time.

Erza: What do you like? What do you like less?

Ben: I like the home office that we have at the moment due to the current situation, but I'm still glad that we have team meetings all the time. We use modern technologies, which interests me a lot. Projects we have are diverse, and so it never gets boring. There is nothing that I don't like in my work.

Erza: What do you like to do in your free time?

Ben: In my free time I like to go skiing in winter and in summer I like to go to the lake with my friends. Since I live right on Lake Walen, I'm often at the lake, whether it's swimming, barbecuing, or actually on the lake with my little 8 hp boat, or on a colleague's boat where we can wake surf. One goal from this year is to take the fishing + boating exam. Actually, I wanted to do this exam already last year, but because of Corona, it was unfortunately postponed.
I am also in a band and play guitar. Our band is called Deadly Jesters, and we play rock and punk. On average, we have 3 concerts a year, but not since last year because of Corona. I also like to do the programming sometimes in my spare time.

Webshop: Article in focus

PAH Blade Elevator

The practical PAH covered raiser was the best seller last year. It makes it possible to increase the load volume by 40%. The load is protected from the weather, and light packages are not easily blown away by protecting the tarpaulin. Order the increase in our webshop for the price of CHF 382.35 incl. VAT.

Do you want the workshop to do the installation for you? Then make an appointment directly at the service. With a little bit of skill, you can also easily mount the canvas extension yourself.

Good to know:

The covered raiser was literally our best-seller in 2020. In total, we sold around 2,263 sets. By way of comparison, we produced 3,200 vehicles last year. So if every vehicle had come with a sheet extension, around 70% of the new vehicles would have been equipped with it :-)
